Editorial Policy

Death Away From Home publishes plain-language guidance on travel protection, repatriation costs, and what happens when a death occurs more than 75 miles from home. Because these are decisions families often make under pressure, we hold our content to a clear standard. This policy explains how we research, write, review, and correct what we publish — and who stands behind it.

Who writes and reviews our content

Our content is written and reviewed by Sara Marsden-Ille, a funeral-industry researcher and consumer advocate with more than fifteen years covering the funeral profession. Sara is co-founder of DFS Memorials LLC and editor of US Funerals Online, an independent consumer guide to funeral costs and end-of-life planning that has been published since 2003. Death Away From Home is operated by DFS Memorials LLC, a member of the Cremation Association of North America (CANA) and the International Cemetery, Cremation and Funeral Association (ICCFA).

How we research

We rely on primary sources wherever possible: government resources such as Medicare.gov and the U.S. Department of State, the funeral providers and mortuary-shipping specialists who perform this work, and recognized trade associations. Cost figures and statistics are drawn from real industry quotes and published data, and cost ranges reflect the genuine variability of transporting remains between locations. Where a claim about a partner’s scale, tenure, or entitlements cannot be confirmed in writing, we do not state it as fact.

Accuracy and updates

We review our guidance periodically and date-stamp material updates. Details of the Death Away From Home Plan — pricing, coverage distances, and what is and isn’t included — are checked against the current plan terms. Where costs or regulations change, we update the relevant pages rather than leaving outdated figures in place.

Editorial independence and disclosure

Death Away From Home is a direct-to-consumer service operated by DFS Memorials LLC. We also publish US Funerals Online, which covers not only this plan but competing plans, providers we have no relationship with, and practices within our own industry that we believe consumers should understand. This common ownership is disclosed wherever it applies. We do not publish content in exchange for payment, and any mention of a product or provider reflects our own editorial judgement.

Corrections

If you spot an error, we want to know. Contact us, and we will review it promptly, correct anything inaccurate, and note material changes. Accuracy matters more to us than being right the first time.
