About Death Away From Home

Death Away From Home is the direct-to-consumer travel protection plan by DFS Memorials LLC. Now you can protect your family without the need to visit a funeral home

Who fulfils the DFS plan

The plan itself is the Travel Plan by Inman, operated by Inman Shipping Worldwide, who have specialised in mortuary repatriation since 1978. Inman coordinates a network of licensed funeral professionals across the United States and internationally, with 24-hour assistance. They are members of ICCFA, NFDA, CANA, FIAT-IFTA and Selected Independent Funeral Homes. Plan obligations are backed by a contractual liability insurance policy.

We say this plainly because you should know exactly who will be looking after your family. Repatriation is not a service anyone can improvise — it needs standing relationships with funeral homes in the place of death, working knowledge of each airline’s cargo requirements, and the ability to handle foreign death registration and consular reporting. That network is what your enrollment buys.

So why buy through us?

Because you cannot buy it from Inman. Inman sells through the funeral trade — their own enrollment page is restricted to registered sales associates. Without a channel like ours, you would need to find a funeral home that carries the plan and enroll through a preneed counselor, usually as part of a prepaid funeral contract.

We changed that. Because we wanted families to have this exceptional cover without needing to plan with a funeral home.

Here, we openly disclose a fixed price for the plan: $450 for an individual.  You will find most other resellers and agents charge more or do not disclose a price.

You enroll online in a few minutes, at a published price, with no funeral contract and no commitment to any particular funeral home. Your member ID is issued immediately, and your online portal is available straight away. Your family chooses the receiving funeral home if the time comes, and Inman delivers there.

Who we are

DFS Memorials LLC was founded in 2012 to address a specific problem: funeral pricing in the United States is opaque, and families making decisions under time pressure routinely pay far more than they need to. We built a network of independent providers offering direct cremation at fair, published prices, and we have run it ever since.

We also publish US Funerals Online, an independent consumer guide to funeral costs, cremation law and end-of-life planning that has been running since 2003. It is written by Sara Marsden-Ille, a funeral industry researcher with fifteen years covering the sector and co-founder of DFS Memorials.

US Funerals Online is federated with DFS Memorials LLC.  We state that because it matters: USF covers this plan, and it also covers competing plans, funeral homes we have no relationship with, and practices within our own industry that we think consumers should be warned about. Common ownership is disclosed on every page where it applies.
